I rather like this one.
Rarely do I need more than 4 programs on quick-call, and this little app handles them nice and neatly, even including a bunch of .xpm icons.
I also like the fact that you can easily change it on the fly (double-RClick on an icon), even if it doesn't update the new icons immediately.
thanks Klaus

Just what I was looking for. Putting into a fluxbox slitlist that both autohides and stays on top means desktop icons with actually cluttering up the desktop. Am running 3 instances, allowing 12 apps to be launched. If possible, maybe some 'tool tips' could be added in a later version.

meant to say - without cluttering up the desktop!

Thanks Geoff,

What do you exactly mean by "Tool Tips" ?

I think Geoff means text that appears when the mouse cursor hovers over one of the four buttons.

A bit like the balloon help in the Window Maker Preferences utility.

That would be pretty neat!

nice tool - even more beautiful with more then one option on a command.
e.g. aterm -tr -ls -...

How do you start several instances with different icons/commands in them. I i start another instance of minidock it's identical to the first.

posted by Jean-Philippe Guillemin (logged user) - 2004-08-30 15:24:26

To launch different minidock instances, use the -c option, ie :

#> minidock -c custom.cf

custom.cf must be located in /etc/minidock/

You can build your .cf file by hand , or just copy default.cf into custom.cf, and customize it from the gui (double right click on an icon).

Simple?

I get a header error when ./Makefile (among other errors, this one is in line 8)

What am i doing wrong? (i am working in DSL 0.8.4 - a debian/knoppix variation -distro)

Error : ./makefile: line 8: HEADERS: command not found

Hi patrick,

I can't figure out why you get this error. Except... perhaps ... if you try to execute the Makefile.

just type "make" , and let me know

some answers to faq

Hi Felix,

1)
> Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkcontainer.c: line 713 (gtk_container_add):
> assertion `w idget != NULL' failed.
No way :) Many gtk apps have it, and I was unable to get rid
of it.

2)
> Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkpixmap.c: line 97 (gtk_pixmap_new): assertion `val
> != N ULL' failed.
It looks like minidock is unable to find the pixmaps, check that the
configuration file is correct, and that any previous version was removed
(make uninstall in the source dir of previous version, and delete
".minidock.cf" in your home dir)

If needed reinstall v1.4 cleanly.

3)
> Do i have to install a special GTK-Library to run it ???
minidock uses the gtk+1 toolkit. gtk+1 is suficient for simple widgets like
minidock, it's always supported, and well documented.

You should install gtk+-devel to and dependant packages to compile minidock.

Best regards

Nice work. What are the requirements for the little icons, however? Do they have to be xpm? And what size? Are there other requirements for the icons? Thanks, and thanks for your work on this app. Very useful.

Hi clawhead,

Icons need to be 24x24 xpm.

If you want an icon that's not included yet in the default set : ask me and I will build it for you.

Thank you, Jean-Phillippe. Yes, if it's not to difficult to make new icons, here are some that interest me (I'm running three instances of minidock). If this is too many to make, I understand. Anything helps.

(1) Krusader
(2) Console with superuser privileges
(3) Midnight Commander with superuser privileges
(4) PG Calc 2
(5) Evolution 2.x
(6) Kedit as user
(7) Kedit as superuser

As you can see, one problem is that I like to have console, file manager and text editors available both with user and superuser privileges. So that adds to my need for icons, I'm afraid.

Whatever you can do, I will be grateful.

Merci infiniment !

I can't understand why my posts are being duplicated on the website? I'm posting just once.

O.K., I think I know what's going on. After posting, I was leaving a tabbed window with this page open. Then a little while later I come back and hit refresh. Firefox asks if I want to resend the Postdata info, and I was saying "yes". I didn't realize the post would still be in the buffer.

So the problem is on my end. Sorry.

Wharf
posted by Plamen (anonymous) - 2005-01-28 19:03:57

Do you know if your application runs in Wharf (Afterstep Dock)? I am not able to run it there. Minidock can run standalone, but not as a part of Wharf. I cannot found any documentation to it. BTW it looks strange if Makefile is marked as executable.

can't launch minidock
posted by Raymond (anonymous) - 2005-02-03 10:06:15

I typed "make", but it said minidock is up to date, so I type " make install ." It did installed minidock and everything seems right, but when I typed "minidock", it said

"./minidock: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libgdk-1.2.so.0: undefined symbol: XListInputDevices
"

I've already updated my gtk+ rpm, but the problem still exists. Can anyone helps me?

Raymond, sounds like minidock might be asking for an OLDER version of gdk than what you have. I have had some luck by symlinking to the newer libs.
example
ln -s libgdk-1.4.so.0 libgdk-1.2.so.0
If the newer libs are backwards-compatible, this ill usually work and avoids possibly tricky problems with having two versions of the same libs installed.
Check to see if your gdk-libs are older or newer.

Same as Raymod, I couldn't get the precompiled binary to run: same error. I did `make clean` and `make` and got a new binary. This one runs, but coughs up a few repetitions of this:
Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkpixmap.c: line 97 (gtk_pixmap_new): assertion `val != NULL' failed.

Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkcontainer.c: line 713 (gtk_container_add): assertion `widget != NULL' failed.

and gives me a blank white item with no icons in my dock. It does, however, respond to clicks, and will launch apps.
Fails to open config files...

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice...

When I try and use the option minidock -c default.cf I get the following error message:

Error opening file default.cf !

Obviously because of the -c flag, I'm trying to run more than once instance of minidock. And because of this it's not possible.

I can right-double-click the icons to change them via the gui, but if I restart each instance has the same buttons, which is a little inconvenient.

I also get another error which is a little confusing:

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate loadable module in module_path: "libxfce.so"

Why would the XFCE window manager be causing conflicts?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Nate.

Forgot to mention, and in all honesty I don't know if this makes a difference...

I'm using Fluxbox but have XFCE installed.
