Description: CDMON is a plug&play daemon that monitors CD medias insertion.
When a CD is detected, cdmon mounts it and displays a dockapp that allows :
- to launch your favorite filemanager (left click)
- to unmount the device and eject CD (right click).
The dockapp also shows the "model" of the CD reader/writer.

Can't get to work :(
posted by Dan (anonymous) - 2004-08-03 07:32:56

Hello there. I like the idea of this program, wish I could get it work though!

Ok, I have famd installed and running, no errors upon running 'cdmon'. However when I run cdmon and put a cd in, it doesn't even come up as a dockapp. Cdmon just sits there with no debug messages whatsoever! :(. Not even gdb gives me help here.

I must admit that I modified the makefile to give the program a more standardised directory structure. Eg: everything is located in the following directories.
/usr/bin/(binarys)
/usr/etc/cdmon/(conf files)
/usr/share/cdmon/(png files)

The modified makefile is much improved from the origional one and more multi-distro friendly too. If any devs want a copy, please just email me. Standardised directory structures helps to ensure linux is usable by everyone!

Here are the associated lines in my /etc/fstab :
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom1 /cdrom1 iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

Here are the associated lines in my /usr/etc/cdmon/cdmon.conf :
/proc/ide/hdc/capacity : /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 hdc-icon.png
/proc/ide/hdd/capacity : /dev/cdroms/cdrom1 hdd-icon.png

Hi,

Dan :
You will find the "working !!" new 0.41 version, with some of the improvements you asked for.

Henry :
I'm not Freebsd coder, but I think that it'll be easy for you to make this port. Thank you by advance for this work, if you need some help to understand the original code, ask me and I will do my best to help you.

CU soon.

JP

I have the same problem Dan described with v0.41 on debian "sarge" 3.1 - cdmon just sits there not doing anything.
some answers

hi, I had the same problem as fred and Stefan. So I made sure the previous version of cdmon was completely removed (make uninstall and make clean), and made sure famd was started at boottime (by placing /path/to/famd in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file). Then I installed 0.41 on my fedora core 2 system with fluxbox as WM, and everything works like a charm now.
I hope this information is of use to you, enjoy.

Smintheu
where did you get famd for fedora core 2?
I also run fedora core 2 and was unable to run the program.

I have fam installed in my computer and I start
it by running
fam -T 0
/usr/sbin/rpcinfo -p | grep fam
391002 2 tcp 988 sgi_fam

when I run cdmon
it does nothing. no dockapp is shown.
Is there a way to debug the app?

Hi Vano,

If you have famd running, then start "cdmon&" .

Cdmon is a monitoring daemon, nothing will happen until you insert a cd.

Let me know if you have problems using cdmon.

Best regards
